BEGNAGRAD - Begnagrad (1982)

Slovenian avant-garde band BEGNAGRAD was formed in Ljubljana (Slovenia, ex-Yugoslavia) in 1975, with following members: Bratko Bibič-accordion, vocal; Bogo Pečnikar-clarinet; Igor Musevič-drums and Vlado Spindler-bass. They recorded early material in 1977 at a Novi Sad radio station, but that was not released before 1992. This formation played an unconventional blend of jazz, rock, swing and European folk traditions, particularly mixing the Alpine, Mediterranean and Balkan influences. This line-up disbanded in 1978, just to be re-formed in 1981 with new members: Nino de Gleria-bass; Ales Rendla-drums, violin and Boris Romih-guitar, with Bibič and Pečnikar as old members. They finally recorded their first and only album "Begnagrad" in 1982. The band was short-lived and ceased to exist in 1983. B. Bibič continued a solo career along with participation with several groups like The Madleys and Nimal.Their only studio album "Begnagrad" was internationally re-issued with some bonus tracks and it remained a highly preached among the avant-garde/prog afficionados. Begnagrad shared many artistic approach with RIO movement and their frequent live gigs across Western Europe in early 1980s led a prominent RIO leader Chris Cutler to claim "they were so good that they were really their own best promotion. ...RIO had ceased to exist by then, otherwise I'm sure Begnagrad would have been invited to join." They were often compared with such RIO acts like Samla Mammas Manna or Stormy Six. (by Seyo S. Fetahagić)

ALEKSANDAR MAKEDONSKI - Za heroje i princeze (1988)

ALEKSANDAR MAKEDONSKI was formed in 1986, in Skopje, then Socialist Republic of Macedonia as an offshoot of the prominent punk rock group Badmingtons, and it included the frontman Vladimir Petrovski - Karter (guitar, vocals), Dejan Škartov-Deko (keyboards), Zoran Janković - Bajo (bass guitar), Vladimir Dimovski (drums) and the female singer Melita Stefanovska (backing vocals). Unlike Badmingtons, who were a punk band, Aleksandar Makedonski was initially a more pop-rock oriented act. The third former Badmingtons member, the drummer Boris Georgiev decided to join the gothic rock cult band Mizar and played on their first self-titled album released in 1988. Aleksandar Makedonski recorded several songs for the national Macedonian Radio-Television music production and soon became popular across the country. The group released its debut album "Za heroje i princeze" for Jugodisk record label in 1988. Unlike their previous material, the album was in Serbo-Croatian, because it was the most widespread language in the multilingual former Yugoslav market. In 1990, they recorded two songs, "Mi se igra" and "Sečavanja" in Macedonian at Mladinski Radio Klub 100, which were released on the Demoskop tape. The line-up soon changed. Melita Stefanovska left and joined the all-female alternative rock band Royal Albert Hall, while Dimovski joined the psychedelic rock group Kleržo together with Škartov, who later moved to Italy in 1991. Karter continued to work with a new bass player Mite Brljamov, but with a different musical style. In 1991, they recorded songs for the second album at the studio of Nikola Kokan Dimuševski of Leb i sol, however it was never released. After a long pause, they recorded a new material throughout 1995, which was finally released as Aleksandar Makedonski's second album "Moeto carstvo" for the Makoton label in 1997. All three original members of Badmingtons are on "Moeto carstvo" along with bassist Zoran Janković. The group finally disbanded, and Karter switched to studio and film work. Later he formed a new group called Opstrukcija which released an album in 1999 before disbanding. In 2007 he reformed the 1997-era Aleksandar Makedonski under the Badmingtons name without Janković. To celebrate that reunion, a CD single was released of two Aleksandar Makedonski tracks and one Badmingtons track under the Badmingtons name. (from wikipedia)

PATROLA - U sredini (1981)

PATROLA formed in Zagreb, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia) in 1980. The first and only album "U sredini" was one of the best works of the time, relying on the typical pop-ska-reggae form with additional power and the impact of pop artists like Blondie, The Police, The Jam, The Clash, Elvis Costello etc. However, throughout the flood Yu-New Wave artists and albums (Azra, Prljavo kazalište, Film, Haustor, Šarlo akrobata, Idoli, Električni orgazam, Stidljiva ljubičica,Parlament, Metak...), Patrola had an accident that the last published album, which is preparing a full two years. Release of the album was postponed due to military service at that time was 15 months, so the occasion of the release sounded like a copy of Prljavo kazalište, Film and Azra, a band was forced to seek its place in "another league" Yu-new wave, which resulting in a much weaker circulation of all these compositions. The album contains ten great pop songs which are the main motives of youthful preoccupations about entertainment, going out and describe the atmosphere of Zagreb these years. (from discogs.com)

BELE VRANE - Uspešnice (1967-1973)

BELE VRANE from Slovenia (ex-Yugoslavia) were very good and influential late 1960s vocal group from Ljubljana who followed mellow pop sound of Mamas and Papas. The fact that slovenian dialect limited their succes in Ex Yu to local Slovenian borders is not really important because for me they were absolutely on the top with the best. At the beginning of 1960s there were few artists who started with rock in Ex Yu and second generation followed shortly afterwards, without exception young urban musicians (mostly students who followed Radio-Luxembourg and its famous pop charts) - in Sarajevo there were "Indexi", in Zagreb "Grupa 220" and "Zlatni Akordi", in Ljubljana "Bele Vrane". From today's perspective this music is still very enjoyable, lots of sunny pop and beautiful harmonies - its only pity that excellent Ditka Haberl (who really had one of the best voices in Ex Yu ever) got only one solo spot ("Običajno popoldne" and guys selfishly took the rest, her song is centerpiece here. In the next decade this group will metarmophose into larger "Pepel in Kri" with Ditka as main vocalist and they will represent Yugoslavia at Eurovision with the song that might be our best entry ever.
